ATTENTION! Protected Giant Mammoth Wasps in Békéscsaba
We would like to inform the residents of Békéscsaba that specimens of the protected Giant Mammoth Wasp (Megascolia maculata) have been observed at several locations throughout the city. The conservation value of each individual is HUF 50,000.
The Giant Mammoth Wasp is the largest wasp species in Europe and is found primarily in the Great Hungarian Plain. We would like to draw attention to the fact that, unlike many other wasp species, Giant Mammoth Wasps do not build nests. They typically stay near decaying tree stumps and may occur in almost any green area within the city.
These wasps are usually active from May until the end of summer. They may be seen flying over lawns in gardens and parks, near rotting wood, or around compost heaps, sometimes in relatively large numbers. Despite their impressive appearance, there is no need to fear them, as they are harmless to humans.
Their destruction is prohibited under the provisions of Act LIII of 1996 on the Protection of Nature.
To help residents identify affected areas, our colleagues are placing information notices and marking tapes where these insects have been observed. This ensures that everyone can continue to enjoy the area safely while allowing the wasps to remain undisturbed in their natural habitat.
Thank you for your understanding.
